Many organizations ask two things about their checkout: can they add their own code or styling to a page, and can the checkout show extra fields only when a donation is large enough. This page covers what is and is not possible, and the options that get you close.
What a checkout does not have
- No custom code, CSS, or HTML block. A checkout’s settings contain no field where you can paste your own code, stylesheet, or script. The one free-form content area is the Custom Footer, which is a rich-text editor (formatted text, not code).
- No per-checkout background setting. There is no option to give one checkout its own page background or custom styling. Colors and backgrounds come from your theme, described below, and apply across your donor-facing pages rather than to a single checkout.
- No amount rule on the built-in address step. The checkout’s mailing address step is controlled only by on/off settings, such as whether to ask for a mailing address and whether to skip the question for donors whose address is already on file. You cannot tell that built-in step to appear only above a certain gift amount.
How to get a similar result
Show a full address only above a donation amount
Use a custom question instead of the built-in address step:
- Open your checkout’s settings and go to its Custom Questions.
- Add a question and set its input type to Address.
- Under Question Conditions, choose a Context Condition and set it to Amount, is greater than or equal to (or is greater than), with your threshold.
- Choose where the answer is saved. If you want it on the supporter, use Save answer to Supporter, where Mailing Address is one of the fields you can map to.
- Turn off the built-in Ask for mailing address setting if you do not want everyone asked.
The question appears only while the donor’s chosen amount meets your condition, and it is hidden again if they change the amount. The same Context Condition list also lets you key a question off whether the gift is recurring, the designation, the payment method type, or the source message. Questions can also be shown based on the answer to an earlier question.
Things to keep in mind:
- This is a custom question, not the built-in address step, so it looks and behaves like your other questions.
- Donors who give as a guest are not shown custom questions or the built-in address step, so this does not collect an address from guest gifts. If you need the address, do not allow guest giving on that checkout.
- Test it with a real amount above and below your threshold before you publish the checkout.
Make the checkout look more like your brand
- Themes (Settings → Themes): set brand colors, surfaces and backgrounds, text and icon colors, button, input and border styles, fonts, and corner rounding. A theme is a fixed set of design settings, not free-form CSS. Colors are not checked for readability, so check contrast yourself.
- Information card: edit the Card Content (rich text), choose to show your organization logo, a custom avatar, or no avatar, upload a Card Background Banner Image, and add up to 3 Card Footer Links.
- Information card placement: on desktop, show the card on the left or hide it. On mobile, choose whether to show it, and whether it appears as its own step or above the checkout.
- Custom Footer: add formatted text below the standard footer. The footer itself cannot be hidden or moved. See Checkout Footer Customization.
Put a checkout on a page you control
If you need full control of the surrounding page, host the checkout on your own website using a link, inline embed, or pop-up. The page around it is yours to style, while the checkout itself keeps the settings above. See Embedding a Checkout on Your Website.
If you use the WeGive Pay donate button, its pop-up accepts a theme setting for colors, light and dark mode, and logo. See Customize the Pay with WeGive button and pop-up.
