Which Email Address Do Notifications Go To?

Every email message WeGive sends to a supporter — donation receipts, recurring gift notifications, welcome emails, and any other triggered or manual message — goes to the email address determined by the message’s To setting combined with the supporter’s Preferred Email on their profile.

The To setting on a message

When you create or edit an email message in Communications, the To dropdown lets you choose which address each supporter receives the message at: Most triggered messages default to Preferred Email, meaning each supporter receives the email at whichever address they (or your CRM sync) have marked as preferred.

What is Preferred Email?

Each supporter profile can store up to three email addresses: Personal, Work, and Alternate. The Preferred Email selector on their profile tells WeGive which one to use when sending messages set to “Preferred Email.” If no preference is set, WeGive defaults to the Personal Email field.

How to change which email gets notifications

There are two ways to change where a supporter receives email notifications:
  1. Update their Preferred Email setting. Open the supporter’s profile in your dashboard, find the Preferred Email field, and change it to Personal, Work, or Alternate. All future messages set to “Preferred Email” will go to the newly selected address.
  2. Change the message’s To setting. If you want a specific message to always go to a particular email type regardless of each supporter’s preference, edit the message and change the To dropdown to Personal Email, Work Email, Alternate Email, or Custom.

CRM sync and Preferred Email

If you use a CRM integration (such as Salesforce or Blackbaud), the Preferred Email setting syncs between WeGive and your CRM. A change to the preferred email field in your CRM will update the supporter’s preference in WeGive on the next sync, which changes where future messages are delivered. If a supporter reports that notifications started going to a different email address unexpectedly, check whether a recent CRM sync updated their Preferred Email setting.

Communication list overrides

If your organization uses the Contact Point feature, individual supporters can have a different preferred email set per communication list. When this is configured, the per-list preference takes priority over the supporter’s profile-level Preferred Email for messages sent through that list.
