# Filtering Supporters by State When Your Data Has Multiple Spellings (e.g. "TX" and "Texas")

> How to filter the Supporters table on Mailing State or Billing State when your account's data mixes different spellings of the same state, and how to combine that with other criteria like a tag using Advanced Filters' AND/OR groups.

# Filtering Supporters by State When Your Data Has Multiple Spellings

The **Mailing State** and **Billing State** filters on the Supporters
table are text fields, not a fixed dropdown of states. That means a
filter like "State is TX" only matches records where the state was
actually entered or imported as `TX` — it won't also catch records
where the same state was entered as `Texas`, `tx`, or any other
variation. If your account's data has a mix of spellings for the same
state, a single "is" condition can miss donors you'd expect it to find.

## Why you might see this

Address data often comes from multiple sources over time — manual entry,
CRM imports, CSV imports — and different sources don't always use the
same format. If some donors have `TX` and others have `Texas` in their
state field, a filter for just one of those spellings will only return
the matching subset.

## How to match multiple spellings at once

The AI filter assistant can only apply one value per condition, so
asking it for "state is TX or Texas" in a single request won't produce a
single combined condition — you'll need **Advanced Filters** to combine
multiple acceptable values of the same field:

1. Open the Supporters table and go to **Advanced Filters**.
2. Create a filter **group** and set its internal operator to **OR**.
3. Inside that group, add one condition per spelling you want to match —
for example, **Mailing State is TX** and **Mailing State is Texas**.
4. If you also want to combine this with other criteria (for example, a
tag), add those as a separate condition or group, and make sure the
**top-level** operator joining the groups is **AND**. This gives you
"(state is TX OR state is Texas) AND tag is X" rather than everything
   being OR'd together.
5. Apply the filter. Results will include any supporter matching either
state spelling, still narrowed by your other AND-ed criteria.

## Tips

* This same approach works for any text-type field where your data might
have more than one spelling or format for the same real-world value —
  not just state.
* If you're not sure which spellings exist in your data, try a **does
contain** condition first (e.g. "does contain Tex") to see what's
actually stored before building out the exact-match OR group.

## Need help?

If you're not sure how your account's address data is formatted, or the
filter still isn't returning what you expect after trying the steps
above, reach out to WeGive Support with the field and values you're
trying to match — we can help confirm what's actually stored.
