# Why Two Donors Sharing a Card Causes Separate Charges

> When two donors (such as spouses or household members) each have their own recurring plan but share the same payment method, both plans charge that card independently. This is expected behavior — each recurring plan is a separate commitment — but it can look like a duplicate charge on the cardholder's bank statement.

## What's happening

Each recurring plan in WeGive is an independent gift commitment. When two supporters — often spouses or members of the same household — each have their own recurring plan but share the same saved card, both plans charge that card on their own schedules. If both plans are set to the same billing date, two separate charges appear on the card statement on the same day.

This is not a duplicate charge or a billing error. Each charge corresponds to a different donor's plan and may go to different funds, campaigns, or amounts. The system processes each plan on its own, with no awareness of whether another plan happens to use the same card.

## How to fix it

If the cardholder or your organization wants to consolidate or separate these charges, here are the recommended steps:

### Option 1: Move one plan to a different card

1. Open the supporter's profile and go to their recurring plan.
2. Click **Edit** on the plan.
3. Under **Payment method**, select a different card or bank account. If the supporter needs to add a new card, they can do so through the donor portal.
4. Save the plan.

The next installment on that plan will charge the newly assigned card instead.

### Option 2: Cancel the extra plan

If one of the two plans was created by mistake:

1. Open the plan that should not continue.
2. Choose **Delete Plan** to cancel it.

The other plan continues charging normally. See [Deleting and Restoring a Recurring Plan](/external/support/giving/deleting-and-restoring-a-recurring-plan) for details.

### Option 3: Pause one plan temporarily

If you need time to sort out which plan should continue:

1. Open the plan you want to pause.
2. Choose **Pause** and select a duration.

No charges will process on the paused plan until it resumes or you resume it manually.

## Important: do not delete the shared card before updating the plans

If you remove a payment method while a recurring plan still uses it, that plan loses its billing source and will not process its next installment. Always reassign the plan to a different payment method or cancel/pause the plan first, then remove the card if needed.
