# How to Reset a Fraud Block on a Payment Method

> WeGive Help Center article: How to Reset a Fraud Block on a Payment Method

If a donor's payment method has been blocked due to suspected fraud, an organization admin can reset the block directly from the WeGive dashboard — no need to contact support.

***

## Why Payment Methods Get Fraud-Blocked

WeGive automatically blocks a payment method (card or bank account) when either of these conditions is met:

1. **Three consecutive failed charges** on that specific payment method.
2. **Five total attempts with zero successful charges** on a new or unproven payment method (the "probationary period" rule).

These rules protect your organization from unauthorized or repeatedly failing charges. The block applies to the specific card or bank account, not to the donor's account as a whole — other payment methods on the same donor are unaffected.

***

## Re-Entering Card Details Does Not Clear the Block

A common misconception: updating or re-entering the same card number, expiration date, or billing details on an already-blocked payment method will **not** remove the fraud block. The block is tied to the payment method record itself, not to the card details on file.

***

## How to Reset the Fraud Block

Organization admins can reset a fraud block in the dashboard:

1. Go to **Payments** in the WeGive dashboard.
2. Find and open the blocked payment method.
3. Click the **Reset Fraud Block** button.

This immediately clears the block and allows charges on that payment method again. There is no cooldown or waiting period — the reset takes effect right away.

***

## Alternative: Use a Different Payment Method

If the donor prefers, they can switch to a different card or bank account. A different payment method has its own independent block state, so it is not affected by the block on the original one.

Keep in mind: if the new payment method is also new and also fails, it can independently trigger the probationary period rule (five total attempts with no successes) on its own.

## Quick Reference

| Scenario | What to Do |
| - | - |
| Same card is fraud-blocked | Use the **Reset Fraud Block** button in the dashboard |
| Donor wants to use a different card | Add the new card — it has its own separate block state |
| Donor updated card details but is still blocked | Use the Reset Fraud Block button — updating details alone does not clear the block |
