# How Multi-Currency Giving Works

> WeGive Help Center article explaining how multi-currency giving works on checkouts and events: what currency donors see by default, how to enable multi-currency selection, and how currency conversion applies.

When a donor opens your checkout or event registration page, the currency shown defaults to your organization's configured currency — it is **not** auto-detected based on the donor's location, browser language, or IP address. If your organization's currency is set to USD, every donor sees USD by default regardless of where they are located.

## Enabling multi-currency selection

You can optionally let donors choose a different currency at checkout. To enable this, turn on **Accept multiple currencies** in your checkout or event settings. Once enabled, donors see a currency selector on the giving page with a full list of supported global currencies.

When multi-currency selection is **not** enabled, donors see only your organization's configured currency — no selector appears.

## How currency conversion works

When a donor selects a currency different from your organization's configured currency, WeGive converts the amount in real time using a live exchange rate.

* The donor sees and enters their gift amount in the currency they selected.
* The actual charge and settlement happen in your organization's configured currency.
* If the exchange rate cannot be retrieved, the currency selection reverts to the previous value and the donor sees an error message.

**The donor's selected currency only changes what they preview and enter** — it does not change your organization's settlement currency or how funds are reported in your dashboard.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does the donor's currency get auto-detected?**
No. The default is always your organization's configured currency. Donors must manually select a different currency if multi-currency is enabled.

**Does enabling multi-currency change my payout currency?**
No. Your payouts and reporting remain in your organization's configured currency regardless of what currency a donor uses at checkout.

**What currencies are available?**
When multi-currency is enabled, donors can choose from a comprehensive list of major and regional currencies. The available list is the same for all checkouts.
